The Risks of GLP-1: What You Need to Know Before Starting

Learn the potential risks of GLP-1 and how to protect your long-term health.

The Risks of GLP-1: What You Need to Know Before Starting

In recent years, GLP-1 medications like semaglutide and liraglutide have become incredibly popular. Originally developed to help manage type 2 diabetes, these drugs are now widely prescribed for weight loss. They work by slowing digestion, reducing appetite, and helping regulate blood sugar levels. For some people, the results can be dramatic — but that doesn’t mean they’re without risks.

Potential downsides

GLP-1 drugs can cause nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and gastrointestinal discomfort. While these may seem minor, more serious concerns include muscle loss, nutrient deficiencies, and rebound weight gain after stopping the medication.

As a sports medicine physician, I’m particularly concerned about muscle preservation. Weight loss isn’t just about shedding fat — if you lose muscle mass along the way, you’re setting yourself up for slower metabolism, reduced strength, and a higher injury risk.

The “quick results” trap

Patients are often excited by the early weight loss these drugs can deliver. But without a long-term plan, it’s easy to see those results fade. Some stop the medication and regain weight; others stay on it indefinitely without addressing underlying habits. In both cases, the body pays a price

A smarter approach

If GLP-1 therapy is right for you, it should be part of a broader plan — one that includes strength training, adequate protein intake, and nutrient monitoring. This ensures you maintain lean muscle, avoid deficiencies, and protect your long-term health.

I’ve worked with patients who’ve successfully used GLP-1 medications, but they paired them with guided exercise, diet, and supplementation. The key was not just losing weight but preserving — or even improving — overall health and performance.
